Jesper Zeuthen / Jacob Anderskov / Anders Vestergaard – Mellemrummets Poesi

Late one evening in February 2025, Zeuthen – Anderskov – Vestergaard are performing at Koncertkirken in Copenhagen, which over the years has become some kind of a home field for the ensemble. Earlier that same night, each of them have played other concerts elsewhere in the city. In the encounter between the familiar room – and carried by the particular kind of concentration that becomes possible when three musicians with decades of shared experience step into the same present now – a musical trajectory with a rare clarity emerges. The concert was not recorded with a release in mind, but upon listening to the recordings, it becomes clear that they contain an ensemble sound the musicians had long dreamed of realizing.

Mellemrummets Poesi (“The Poetry of the In-Between”) is the trio’s fourth album. The music unfolds as one long, unbroken arc, with its own unpredictable logic and a strong melodic core. It can seem hyper abstract and utterly simple at once; gentle and powerful, direct and enigmatic. Within this music, and not least in Jesper Zeuthen’s saxophone playing, one senses an ancient Nordic expressionism that defies definition. It is rooted neither in nostalgia nor in immediate recognizability, but in a vibrant, distinctly Zeuthen-esque intensity where even highly complex gestures appear simple and precise.

Over the past decade, the trio has developed an interplay that is empathetic and multidimensional. The band shares a clear underlying sense of form and direction yet plays with an ever-growing openness toward the unexpected; they are an ensemble that rests securely within its own practice and yet dares to move to its outer edges. The album can be heard as one continuous movement – a wide river with swirls and undercurrents, its layers gradually being revealed. For the listener willing to surrender to it, the music offers a tangible sense of catharsis – the feeling that something complex is allowed to settle into place without being explained.
