Insecta is Simon Toldam’s musical exploration of microscopic sound, inspired by Levon Biss’ extraordinary macro photography of insects. Performed by Toldam, Torben Snekkestad and Peter Bruun, the music transforms whisper-quiet acoustic sounds into intimate, richly detailed soundscapes. Following the acclaimed live audiovisual work, Insecta now moves to CD and streaming worldwide.
What happens when you magnify sound in the same way that a microscope magnifies an image?
On this release, composer and pianist Simon Toldam invites the listener deep into a rarely heard acoustic sound world. The music ranges from repetitive minimalism to choreographed intensity and is played at the volume of a whisper. Through extremely sensitive amplification, almost inaudible sounds are magnified, revealing a new depth, intimacy and physical presence. Overtones, resonances and subtle timbral nuances emerge, opening up a new musical language – the language of quiet sounds. Imagine lying beneath Simon Toldam’s grand piano, right next to the strings. Inside the bell of Torben Snekkestad’s saxophone and reed trumpet. Directly beneath Peter Bruun’s roto-toms. Or with your ear pressed right up against stone rubbing against stone.
“With INSECTA, I wanted to explore what happens when we listen to sound as closely as we look at something through a microscope. The music is played at almost a whisper, but through sensitive amplification, tiny acoustic details become enormous and physical. I became fascinated by the unexpected sounds that emerge from the instruments when you listen this closely—overtones, resonances, friction and minute movements. The music grew out of this process of listening and discovery. It is connected to Levon Biss’ macro photographs of insects, where an invisible world suddenly becomes visible. On the CD, the images are gone, leaving the listener to create their own inner landscapes from the sounds.” — Simon Toldam
